May 5 is National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S)

May 5 is designated as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S). This is a day to honour and remember all missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People who are more than twelve times as likely to go missing or be murdered than any other population in what is now known as Canada. May 5 is also known as Red Dress Day, which is meant to draw attention to missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People and is a call for all Canadians to remember and to take action.

On Monday, May 5th, students from our Gr.12 International Law and Human Rights course will be sharing information about this day and the tragic statistics in order to raise awareness in our community. They will be asking our students to, “take a moment to learn more, to listen and to stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities”.
