As part of the School’s Learning and Improvement Plan, we are implementing a Grade 9 and 10 Reading program that will start for students on Monday, December 9th. Through conversations with JHSS staff and review of data, a need for students to be provided with more direct time for reading has been identified. We are starting this program in Grades 9 and 10 to assist with several areas of student literacy, specifically reading fluency, accuracy, expression and the rate at which a student reads text. All of these aspects when strengthened will allow students to enhance their understanding of what they are reading.The new program, READ (Read, Enjoy, And Discover), will occur four days a week during different periods of the day: Monday, Period A, Tuesday, Period B, Wednesday, Period C, and Thursday, Period D, for a minimum of 15 minutes. Students may be provided with a subject-specific article, or a book of personal interest or a teacher may model reading fluency by reading out loud while students follow along.

Our goal is that this program will not only help students with success in all of their classes as they work towards graduating from JHSS but also provide the skill of powerful, fluent reading and confidence for life.
