Dear JHSS Parents, Guardians, and Students,
As school leaders, our most important job is to provide a safe, happy, and focused place for students to learn and grow.
Technology is a big part of our lives. It helps students connect with friends and express their creativity. However, having phones in class has posed significant challenges. When cell phones are out during class time, it is hard for students to focus, learn, and truly connect with the people around them.
We saw great success with no cell phones in the classroom this past year and will expand the policy this fall.
Starting September 2026, JHSS will add no cellphones or headphones in the hallways during class time to the policy.
📱 Rules for Phones and Headphones
- Cell Phones: Phones must be turned off or put on silent. They must stay inside a bag, backpack, or locker during all class times.
- Headphones and Earbuds: These must be put away out of sight before walking into the classroom. If a teacher gives permission, they can be plugged into or Bluetoothed to a Chromebook for schoolwork. They may never be connected to a phone during class.
- Hallways and Bathrooms: Students are not allowed to use phones or headphones/earbuds in the hallways during class time or in the bathrooms at any time.
⏱️ When CAN Students Use Their Phones?
Devices may only be used during these times:
- Before the morning bell rings
- In the hallways between periods
- At lunchtime
- After school
- During a spare period (only in the Cafeteria, Hub, or Front Foyer)
⚠️ What Happens If a Student Breaks the Rules?
If a student has trouble following these rules, they will be asked to take their device to the main office. It will be turned off and kept safe for the rest of the school day in the main office.
- Note for Parents & Students: Phones kept in the office cannot be picked up at lunchtime. They will stay there until the end of the school day.
- Buying Lunch: Students who usually use their phones to pay for food will need to bring cash or a physical debit card instead.
- Urgent Messages: Parents, if you need to reach your child urgently during class time, please call the main office directly rather than texting them.
We believe this policy will help students do better in class and enjoy more face-to-face time with their peers.
Thank you, parents, for supporting these rules at home, and thank you, students, for helping us make our school the best place it can be! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our administration team.
Sincerely,
The JHSS Staff
