HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

 

Healthy Active Living Education, Open, PPL1OX (Female), PPL1OY (Male), PPL1OA (Fast Forward Female), and PPL1OB (Fast Forward Male), Grade 9

This course emphasizes students’ daily participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will learn movement techniques and principles, ways to improve personal fitness and physical competence, and safety/injury-prevention strategies. They will investigate issues related to healthy sexuality and the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and will participate in activities designed to develop goal setting, communication, and social skills. Athletic attire, such as a t-shirt, shorts, socks, and proper athletic shoes, is required for hygiene and safety purposes. Students have the option of purchasing t-shirt and shorts from School Day for approximately $30. 

 

Healthy Active Living Education, Open, PPL1OI (All Genders), Grade 9

This course emphasizes students’ daily participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living.  This mix of recreational games and sport-based program delivery is ideal for those who love all forms of movement with a less competitive environment than the traditional phys ed course. It is great for those looking to maintain an active lifestyle and learn more about athletic skills and strategies. Health topics will include: personal safety & decision making skills, substance use & abuse, nutrition, and healthy growth & sexuality. Athletic attire, such as a t-shirt, shorts, socks, and proper athletic shoes, is required for hygiene and safety purposes. Students have the option of purchasing t-shirt and shorts from School Day for approximately $30. 

 

PAF2OX (Female), Personal and Fitness Activities, “Powerfit”, Grade 10, Open

Students will be introduced to a variety of different training methods such as: weight training (VBT via Gym Aware), circuit training, functional training and cardio‐vascular training. This is an ideal course to improve personal fitness or train for a specific sport. Activewear is required.

 

PAF2OY (Male), Personal and Fitness Activities, “Powerfit” , Grade 10, Open

Students will be introduced to a variety of different training methods such as:  weight training (VBT via Gym Aware), cardiovascular and alternative training.  This course will improve personal fitness or train for a specific sport.  Activewear is required.

 

PPL2OX (Female), PPL2OY (Male), Healthy Active Living, Grade 10, Open

This course emphasizes participation in fitness through traditional sports.  Activewear is required.

 

PAF3OX (Female), Personal and Fitness Activities, “Powerfit”, Grade 11, Open

This course encourages participation in various group fitness activities to further improve strength (VBT via Gym Aware), flexibility, balance, endurance and coordination. Students will experience new and exciting ways to stay healthy for life. Students will learn about fitness, mental health, and health issues that are particularly important to young girls today.  Activewear is required.

PAF4OX (Female), Personal and Fitness Activities, “Powerfit”,  Grade 12, Open

This course is intended for students who value or wish to improve their personal fitness.  Students will develop and implement personal physical fitness plans. Activewear is required.

 

PAF4OY (Male), Individual and Small Group Activities, Grade 12, Open

This course is intended for students who value or wish to improve their personal fitness.  Students will develop and implement personal physical fitness plans. Activewear is required.

 

PLF4M, Active Living Leadership (Powership), Grade 12, University/College

This course enables students to explore the benefits of lifelong participation in active recreation and healthy leisure and to develop leadership and coordinating skills needed to plan, organize, and safely implement recreational events and other activities related to healthy, active living. Students will also learn how to promote the benefits of healthy, active living to others through mentoring and assisting them in making informed decisions that enhance their well-being. The course prepares students for university programs in physical education and health and kinesiology and for college and university programs in recreation and leisure management, fitness and health promotion, and fitness leadership.  An application and interview is required for this course.  The link for the application is posted on the school’s website under Guidance.  Prerequisite: Any Health or Physical Education Course.

 

PPL4OI, Healthy Active Living Education, Grade 12, Open

PPL 4OI is a Co-Ed version of PPL 3OY and 3OX. This course emphasizes participation in fitness through traditional sports. Activewear is required.

 

PSK4UI, Exercise Science, Grade 12, University

This course is a science based course with a sports influence. Topics covered are anatomy, sport injuries, exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, history of sports, and sociology of sport.   Strongly recommended if pursuing kinesiology or science at university. Prerequisite: Any Grade 11 U, U/C course in Science or senior Phys Ed.
